TRANSFERS TO MARKETS

Visiting a market in the Algarve is a great way to spend the day and immerse yourself in the local culture. There are excellent markets spread throughout the region - monthly local markets, daily markets and also special annual or seasonal markets.

Located in an emblematic building from the early twentieth century, it is easily identifiable by its exterior features and its imposing reddish domes. This space attracts thousands of visitors not only for its architectural and heritage value but also for its varied colours, textures and unique aromas, highlighting the culture, customs and traditions of the region daily.

Set in one of the buildings constructed on "stilts", the market area consists of two rectangular spaces - the Fish Market and the Vegetable Market. Open daily, it is visited by hundreds of people looking for the best fresh and organic ingredients.

Recently restored, the old Lagos market, on the marginal avenue, is currently one of the city's attractions. The ground floor maintains the traditional functions of selling fish, vegetables, fruits, flowers, and other fresh products, filling itself with colour and animation during the mornings. The upper floor has a viewpoint overlooking the town and its bay, and a restaurant serving Algarve cuisine. On the stairs, a famous poem by Sophia de Melo Breyner is represented on a panel.

PLACES TO VISIT IN THE ALGARVE

If you are in the Algarve, do not miss the opportunity to explore some of the most emblematic points of southern Portugal exclusively. Meet the most emblematic points of the region and get involved in unique moments of deep cultural connection.

LAGOS

One of the most picturesque and impressive settings in the region. With rocks sculpted by the tides over thousands of years and caves and tunnels naturally designed by sea erosion. With its transparent water and incredible shades of blue, Ponta da Piedade is a must-see for everyone in the region.

The Roman and Muslim settlements in the city had a great impact on the traditionality that the centre of Lagos presents. Lagos is an authentic Portuguese town, with cobbled streets, typical Algarvian restaurants and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The town perfectly combines traditional Algarve culture with wonderful beaches and modern tourist facilities.

Located on the Bay of Lagos, this Marina has the privilege of being right next to the historical centre of the town that was the birthplace of the Portuguese Discoveries. Since its opening in 1994, the different crews of various nationalities that visit Lagos Boat Harbour are the best ambassadors one could ask for to the region.

SILVES

Situated on the highest point of the hill where Silves is located, this fortification is one of the most impressive works of military architecture left by the Arab heritage, strongly verified in the region.

Considered the "most remarkable temple of gothic architecture in the Algarve". It is thought to have been built in the late 13th century, after the final conquest of the city. In 2010 this National Monument underwent a restoration programme.

It is estimated that the Silves Roman Bridge or "Ponte Velha" as it is commonly called, whose reconstruction dates back to the 15th century, may have existed at the time of the Arab occupation. Some authors justify this fact by the existence of traces of a Roman road nearby.

PORTIMÃO

Portimão's Marginal has a wide pedestrian avenue, all laid out in typical Portuguese pavement. The palm trees placed all along the waterfront give it an exotic character. The existing park benches are a good reason to sit and enjoy the river landscape.

This represents one of the last Filipino military constructions in the Algarve. The fort underwent significant restoration and remodelling works between the 18th and 20th centuries and during these works, the cliff was reinforced with modern constructions, which allowed for an expansion of the viewpoint area. The fort has panoramic views over the river Arade, the city of Portimão and its marina.

Considered one of the most picturesque villages in the region. Alvor still retains many of its Moorish roots dating back to the time when the region was controlled by the Moors. This seafaring fishing village is deeply religious. The traditional Algarvian houses, small narrow streets and the Alvor estuary make this village a peaceful and relaxed holiday destination.

Developed on a hillside full of typical houses, this village offers one of the most beautiful postcards to visit the Algarve. It is possible to admire the stone wall - which divides the land from the sea entering through a river to almost the inhabitants' doors - and wooden fishing boats randomly anchored in a small bay.

SAGRES E VILA DO BISPO

The most imposing fortification in the region. The Sagres fortress is the human extension of the existing natural rock, having been for several centuries the main battle station inserted in a geostrategic system of maritime defence.

Located in Sagres Fortress. The lighthouse consists of a square tower with a lantern and service balcony, connected to a shallow building used for the storage of equipment. The lantern is white with a red dome.

With a height of 28 metres and a range of 32 metres. The lighthouse came into operation in October 1846. Its optical lighthouse, weighing four tons, is among the six heaviest lighthouses in the world. Currently, a museum complex is installed on the site.

Strategically positioned to protect the Algarve coast. This fortress, like the one in São Vicente, is classified as the property of public interest. It is currently closed to the public due to the risk of collapse.

With its façade covered with coloured crockery, "Mó" House of Handicrafts is a tourist attraction not to be missed in the region. Located in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, on the edge of the National Road between Cape St. Vincent and Sagres Fortress.
